Abstract This paper attempts to examine the roles language and literature could play in tackling security challenges in Nigeria. The current dreadful situation in the country with so much banditry, kidnapping, gruesome killing and the like calls for urgent attention. Unfortunately, these security challenges have caused the untimely death of many innocent people and have equally led to the destruction of properties worth trillions of naira, thus wreaking havoc to the individual and national economies. Using library information, the paper adopts the sociological approach to discuss the causes of conflicts and insecurity as well as the ways in which language and literature can serve as panacea to the security challenges in the nation. It was found that both individuals and the government have their own roles to play in proffering solutions to the problems. It was further discovered that through literature and the positive use of language, insecurity could be checked, averted and conflicts resolved. Thus, the study concludes that both language and literature influence the society and they are in turn influenced by the latter. As such, both of them could help to restore peace and security, thereby building the nation. Based on this premise, some recommendations were made.
